Two Australian sisters, planning to travel Canada in August. My sister is a slacker so I am doing all the research and came across this great group! Could anyone give us... well me some advice on what places are a must within Canada? I'm looking to do some hiking, canoeing, and discovering some beautiful spiritual places which we hear Canada is so great for!!! Nice work Canada Don't mind some touristy destinations (for my sister, if I make her to do much physical exercise she might kill me) but mainly we'd like to discover Canada through local wonder eyes.
Canada is a mighty big place and you could spend a lifetime exploring and not see all of it but a few suggestions for you to Google would be province of Nova Scotia home basing it in Halifax. Lots of opportunity for Kayaking and hiking particularly in the Cape Breton area.
Another option would be the Prince Edward Island area, home base Charlottetown, lots of beaches,biking ,Kayaking.hiking, arts and crafts

Canada is very big and if you are arriving from Australia , you might be coming to Vancouver , you can spend some time exploring Bristish Columbia , then head to Jasper and the Canadian Rockies.
Vancouver is very vibrant and diverse city which will satisfy the touristy part of the trip.
If you have time you can fly to Toronto, the city itself is amazing a mix of every nationality on earth, a lot of good restaurants offering cusine from all over the world.
Needless to say CN tower in Toronto is a must see and in August the weather is good so the views are quite clear from the top.
From Toronto you can go to Algonquin Provincial Park for hiking , kayaking and wild life.
Montreal is realy a must if you come to Canada, besides being french speaking city, it has different feel to it , more European feel .

If you are in the area, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park just east of Thunder Bay is a true gem.
On highway 16, From Hazleton to Prince Rupert is gorgeous.
Squamish (just north of Vancouver)
Vancouver
Jasper, Banff, Kootenai National Parks
Barkerville, just south of Prince George
if you are looking for a cool spot on Canada why don't you try to explore the Ksan Historical Indian Village...

The transportation will depend on two factors: how much time you have at hand? and how much money you want to spend?
If you rent a car, usually they offer good deal on weekly and monthly rental but one thing to keep in mind that the gas prices have been hovering around a dollar for over two years now. Let alone when you rent a car, you need to park it and parking rate in Toronto for example can be very steep especially in downtown.
There is a budget airline (porter) that covers Ontario, Quebec and east cost, they have their own specials and you can get a good deal.
West jet is another national airline a bit pricier than porter but it connects east and west cost; let's say if you don't want to drive from Toronto to Vancouver, they would be your best bet.
Of course trains is another options, when you check their rates I don't think they are any cheaper than flying consider the time you spend sitting on the train.
Transportation within the cities is very easy and affordable, for example Toronto has an extensive ground transportation system (buses and metro) If you are staying few days, it's wise to invest in weekly metro pass that allows you unlimited travel in buses, subway trains, light rail train.

Transportation wont be an issue city to city or public transit around major cities but if you want to explore the country side in any detail a car is about your only option..
