A friend of mine is currently in Italy on long visa and have missed the deadline to obtain the permesso di sorgiono (permit of stay) which is needed if the stay exceeds 90 days. the friend is now returning back.
Since he's in Italy illegally, he risks being fined upon exiting, and registration in the Schengen Information System. This may severely restricts his options of returning to Italy in the (near) future, but there's little to be done about that now.
