I'll be in the following cities from Sept to Dec this year. Have been to many of them before so done most of the usual touristy things so was looking for unusual sights, building, things too do etc.
Boston. See the USS Constitution historic frigate. The ship, nicknamed "Old Ironsides" is still commissioned with a US Navy crew.
Anaheim. Skip it unless you like Disneyland. Instead, head for nearby Huntington Beach and enjoy the area off season.
Los Angeles. Recommend you look east towards suburban San Marino and take in the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. Wear good walking shoes and plan to hike the extensive grounds of some of the most expensive real estate in California. It's a great window to the past when California was wide open spaces and if one had the money to build an baronial estate.
Tacoma. Point Defiance park. Amazing ecosystem on Puget Sound. Or cross the bridge over to scenic Gig Harbor.

In Toronto, if you want to do the traditional tourist things, there is the CN tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and, if you're heading out of the city, there's Niagara Falls.
If you want something less touristy, there's a lot of interesting neighbourhoods to explore. If you start at Queen Street and Yonge Street, you'll be right in the centre of downtown with the Eaton Centre nearby. Head west on Queen Street and you'll pass through a variety of different neighbourhoods, most of them really interesting. It used to be a real bohemian neighbourhood, but the yuppies are slowly moving in. The further west you go, though, the more boho it gets. If you do it on foot, you could go out as far as the Trinity Bellwoods park. Or you could do it on the streetcar and go all the way out to Roncesvalles and head north on that street for another nice little Polish neighbourhood.
Dundas west of Yonge is also nice and will take you past the Art Gallery.
College Street west of Bathurst has fun bars, nice restaurants and pretty side streets.
East of Yonge Street, there's Little India on Gerard, Greektown on the Danforth. And Queen Street East out near the beaches is really nice.
There is also the distillery district. As the name implies, it used to be old factories and distilleries. They have kept the beautiful old brick buildings, which now house restaurants, micro-breweries, art galleries, boutiques and theatres.

If you are driving to Florida, Charleston's Patriots Point Naval Museum is impressive.
If you are in Florida in September you might want to go over to Titusville and watch the last Space Shuttle lift off,check NASA website for exact day and time.

(1) In Newark, Ohio, visit the Longaberger Basket headquarters. It is shaped like a gigantic picnic basket.

Also worth visiting are Hearst Castle near Cambria, California, the Vanderbilt Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, and the old mansions of Newport, Rhode Island.
For unusual restaurants (all with great food), visit La Caille in Sandy, Utah (www.lacaille.com), The Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas, and Shadowbrook in Capitola, California (www.shadowbrook-capitola.com).
For the best steak in the country (but not an usual restaurant), visit Peter Lugar's in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. For the best seafood (also not an usual restaurant), visit K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen in New Orleans, Louisiana.
