I have to be in Hong Kong between 10 Jan and 20 Jan. I've been looking at plane tickets, and they're around $1800. Cheapest one was $1300 involving a lot of transfers.
Maybe you could fly to Singapore, if that's cheaper, and take the train to Kuala Lumpur from there (it only costs about $20, as I recall). It's about 7-8 hours by train.
BTW, if you are a citizen of a western country (Australia or a European country, Canada or U.S.) you don't need a visa for Malaysia or Hong Kong (or Singapore) although you do need one for mainland China.
1) I've read that Perkins Shipping Group Pty operate a barge that runs Darwin-Dili (East Timor) -Singapore (and reverse) 3 times a month. They may take passengers but probably not due to security, health and safety reasons and immigration reasons but you could always contact them and ask.
Then fly Dili to Bali or bus/ferry to Bali which would take a few days.
2) Maybe get a reasonably-priced flight from Darwin to Kupang in West Timor then fly or work your way through the islands west to Bali for a flight to Malaysia.
3) try Jetstar one-way Darwin to Bali (I searched their site flying on Jan 7th 2011 and came up with about $270 AUD one-way including 20Kg baggage). Course that means getting to Darwin.
Hiya, I just picked up an AirAsia flight, Gold Coast to KL for $75, 2 weeks ago... get yourself on to the AirAsia newsletter to take advantage of their sales...

75 US, that is so cheap... does that include all the taxes... I hate going to websites and they have rates and its not inclusive off taxes, and you have to transact before you get the total amount.
That price you have said is extremely cheap for the time of year you are looking at going. Sometimes in quiet times it is about that price, but regularly when you look in the December/January period you find over the top amounts like $2000+ AUD. If Air Asia is too expensive then you are not getting to Asia without swimming!
