Did you visit Vietnam? what is problem with your travel in Vietnam?

The main problem that tourists have are the scams - Taxi, Cyclo, Gambling, Tourist Pricing

As long as you know about these scams, they are easily overcome.

Taxi - probably the biggest headache - drivers that don't take you to the right hotel and meters that overcharge (take Mai Linh Group cabs only)

Cyclo - surprise charges - stand your ground and insist that they take you to police station when disputes happen

Gambling - (mainly in Saigon) accept no offers on the street, PERIOD!

Tourist Pricing - stand your ground and be prepared to walk away

(these scams are not unique to VN, but do seem to happen much more frequently here)

I like to have my hotel/guesthouse meet my plane or train, and I use very few cabs

Vietnam is well worth the extra effort you need to travel here

Dear Daawgon

Thank very much for your advise. Look like you have long time in Vietnam and get many problem? where are you visit?
I wonder, before take travel in Vietnam did you read some important information of Vietnamese culture?

P/s: sorry about for my poor English!

I prefer Hanoi City the most. I also like Sapa, Dalat and Hoi An. Everyone encounters problems here, but as I say, it's not a really big deal. I love the place and plan to return for my 4th trip soon. I have several Vietnamese friends and have helped Viet refugees settle in the USA - maybe I understand their problems a little better than most? The people are the reason I keep returning here - they are simply wonderful (most are very honest and most welcoming - a happy country too!)

I have been to VN 5 times. Like Johnny, I love VN and hope to retire there. But there are problems that all visitors must cope with. Basically they all have to do with separating you from your money. We have too much, they don't have enough. This mindset is what motivates many Vietnamese that deal with visitors. This is why some hotels will overcharge you for tours. You don't know the 'real price' yet. You avoid being scammed by knowing prices. This applies to: hotels, tours, taxis, cyclos, souvenirs, all shopping, etc.

Learn the 'real price', learn how to bargain, walk away if not happy with the price. You are not obligated to buy anything. VN is a great country to visit, just don't be a sucker and donate money to every scam artist you will encounter.

yes, like Mike said, you should bargain maybe 2 or three times. If you have experience with shopping, maybe it is much easier.
For taxi scamb from airport, highly recommend you that you should contact hotel about pick up service from them.
And whenever you want to go somewhere, take a taxi, cyclo...you should ask hotel staff about how far is it from hotel and then approximate money you have to pay. Sometimes taxi will drive around and around then you have to pay much more than ever.
Another problem about currency rate. Sometimes you should pay in VND, sometimes USD if you don't know exact currency rate and local money.
G'luck for everything.

Hi all!

I deeply sympathize with you because i used to have similar problems. When i leaving Hue city ( I was IT manager at La Residence Hotel & Spa ), i go to Hanoi for setup new hotel ( Hanoi old quarter ) i get many complain from traveler.
