Hi there! Any advice on how to get from Madrid to Athens?Ferries take too long so I thought I'd fly.Any budget airline you guys know of flying this route? Thanks!
Athens airport is very quiet. For a city of some 4million people, it has a very average choice of international flights.
Iberia, Spain's national carrier - has services from Madrid to Athens, but Greece's national carrier - Olympic, doesnt. However, the Iberia flights are about the same cost as a transatlantic fare from The UK to The USA, generally.
There is an airline called 'Aegean Air' that goes from Madrid to Athens, but their flights are not very cheap during the peak season either. They might have the occasional bargain, but I've never seen anything much under around €160 one way. Outside of the holidays there are some good prices though.
Outside of peak times (European school summer holidays especially - which are from Mid-June to the first week in September), Easyjet will get you there, with a change in Milan - for around €40-€50 one way.
However within the holidays, expect to pay 5 or 6 times more.
There is a Spanish low cost airline (belongs to Iberia) that had flights from Madrid to Athens but now they are no longer scheduled:
Right now, there are only direct flights from Barcelona.
Maybe you find cheaper to take the train from Madrid to Barcelona instead of traveling with the expensive airlines that make the Madrid-Athens route. If you buy the train tickets in the website of Renfe (Spanish rail company) with a month of advance you can get the web fare, which is quite a good offer.

Vueling's cheapest one way price from Barcelona - Athens is around €110.
Renfe from Madrid - Barcelona is another €40.
I think the Easyjet option is better, even with a stop-over in Milano.
Maybe EasyJet option is better. He could check both options in the dates he wants to travel and find the best one for him.
I really cant see a cheaper option. Its certainly not the quickest choice, but the price is good and itll be light years faster than any boat route in mind.
Goodness knows how a boat would work. A ferry from Madrid to Athens? Im lost with that one.
The best search engine I came across until now is it lists the flights from where you can buy them. I did a quick search on 9-9 (as you gave no date, I picked one at random), and it give a flight with Aegeann for 87 euro (single) from Madrid to Athens.
One remarks about the Renfe website. You can book 62 days in advance. If you want to have a cheap trip, book ahead in time, and check 62 days before the date to get the cheapest option (which I guess is the Estralla option, which is cheaper than the Web option.) For the AVE trains, it really pays off to book ahead, because the normal tariff is pretty expensive. Also keep in mind that in Spain going by buss is a cheap option.
Hey,thanks guys! I appreciate your advice.
I'm planning to go to Athens on the 18th of Aug.At the moment, the easyjet option sounds good and faster than the other options. Nevertheless, thanks again for taking the time out to answer. Have a great day to you all!
