Travelling around North America. Plane or Train?

Hi,

Alan,
There is no train service to Las Vegas anymore. That might rule out the train option. Take a look at using the on Greyhound. $539 for 60 days.

Good luck with your planning.

I guess if you just want to see big cities you may as well fly particularly between the west coast cities to the east coast cities, might want to add Boston to your list and unless you are going to Disney World theres not much in Orlando.

Basically, you're interested in the West Coast and East Coast. I would suggest the train for you from Chicago to California. Since you want to go all the way over to the East Coast, I would fly to Vegas and on to Florida (bus would take too long/boring and the only train goes from LA to New Orleans). has pretty good one-way fares if you book well ahead. Florida north to New York is easily done on the train.

The USA has pretty spotty rail coverage, and requires a mix of travel. 8 weeks on a bus would be pure hell!
Prices go down quite a bit after Labor Day (first week of September). This is a country of autos and Interstate highways - thus our demand for so damn much oil!!!

Buses are too long, too many stops and the toilets are not that great...but it would be an adventure!
