cmiles has indicated that this thread is about France
It's not often that I come across fashion advice requests on TP, but I will try my best to help.
After living in France for a while I've come up with a few basic rules of French fashion:
1-Anything that can double as athletic clothing should be used as ONLY athletic clothing (running shoes, sweatpants, sport t-shirts)
2-The French love putting together an entire outfit before attempting to get dressed, being "put-together" is very French
3-Everyone needs a bag, backpacks, are generally for school or hiking. And accessories are a must.
September should still be fairly balmy in Avignon, definitely pack plenty of walking shorts and maybe a light/mid-weight jacket for the evenings or a rainy day. All fanny packs and ball caps should stay at home.
Hope this helps

If you are going to Avignon in summer, you are a tourist - no one else in their right mind would go there - so be a comfortable tourist and enjoy it - Avignon is worth a few hours, there is not much to see except the outside of the Palais, the gardens are nice, the insides are all empty .
If you are a tourist then dress as you wish - be comfortable, use a small back pack - the other writer is incorrect in many ways - casual in summer in the south of France is the norm, backpacks (sac a dos) are very practical and many business people use these in paris as their briefcase
It will be hot and sticky in summer, dress light, sensible light but practical walking shoes, do not put anything in your pockets do not have things in a handbag.

Sorry, I don't take these fashion questions too seriously !
What the well dressed US tourist is wearing in Paris these days :
Avignon is currently over 100F. Within the walls, it will be airless and hotter, but with low humidity.
Young tourists are wearing as little as is decent.
Always remember - no one knows you & no one cares how you look.

I love this! An American concerned about not looking American. SO refreshing! As we are seemingly spotted from miles away.
Its easy and I think you will be fine:
No white Sneakers or white socks.
No Baseball caps
No University hoodies.
No Fanny packs (bum packs)
No Sandals - or you may be mistaken as an Aussie - which in some circles can be worse than Americans.

Hey all, let's cut cmiles a break. 1) Yes it will be hot, but take it easy and try to get to the seaside if you are able 2) you'll enjoy yourself no matter what! 3) I have a blog/website about Paris (had an apt. there and now have a place in the Southwest) - this is a common question so do not feel ashamed for asking, its smart to ask 4) I would also say, beyond no sneakers - no shorts. In general the French don't wear shorts, and if they do its more often its the men wearing the very long kind of shorts 5) stick with sundresses and skirts and you'll be fine with comfortable walking shoes - perhaps even a spanish fan for fanning yourself whilst visiting churches and the like
I've been in the south of france many times in the summer and you'll be just fine - enjoy yourself and Happy Birthday to the lucky lady!
Go Naked!
Seriously, why fill your suitcase with clothes on the way there? You want to buy souvenirs anyway, so why not buy something useful like something to wear? That way you do not have to carry a heavy suitcase on the way over, you have more room for gifts and you can decide what to wear to suit the local temperature once you get there.
I would bring your own comfortable shoes as finding the right shoe size for you can be a pain.
Of course...wear something on the way over so they let you in the country!
