so i am beginning to plan a trip starting in belize and ending in colombia or ecuador. i will have about 3 mos. i am looking for suggestions on where to stop and approximately how much money i should have (i am thinking around $3000? not sure if this is ridiculouslt low or not.) i have travelled on buses in south america but never thru central america. are buses a safe/ efficient way of travelling? i am still reading up on places to stop but i thought all the experienced travllers on this website could offer some useful pointers. any and all information would be greatly appreciated!
3000 is doable. If you're not a big drinker. You'll have to blow through Costa Rica, ever more expensive. Belize is no lightweight on cost either, but I love the place. I'd have 4 grand available to me, with a G as a buffer, though.
Remember, and this has got to be the thousandth time I say this, there is no road through the Darien Gap from Panama to Colombia. So you have to fly, OR!!! (and worth it on your kind of trip) sail from Panama around to Cartagena through the San Blas Islands. Either way, these days, it's about three hun these days. Thumbnail sketch of advice. Get back to me once you've looked into that.

I travelled through Central America as a sole (blonde haired) female traveller without too much trouble... I did make sure that when I took the local 'chicken buses' I always left early in the morning and made sure I arrived at my destination well before dark. I did take some longer haul coaches overnight though and had no problems.
For the most part I felt the buses in Central America were safer than thier South American counterparts... that's just based on my instinct/feeling though and I'm not truely sure of the true crime rates (sometimes it's better not to know!)
One place I'd say definately allow some time for is Guatemala - I knew very little about the country before I went there and just fell in love with the place! Although try and spend as little time as possible in the big cities. If you're loking for somewhere a bit different to chill out for a few days, head down to Monterrico on the coast. It's a great place to lie on the black sand beaches and see some turtles!
