First things first: do you have a work permit for the UK?

You'll need to be a bit more specific than that. Have a look to see if are relevant to you. If your mum is from the UK, then you might either be a British citizen (by descent) already, or be able to register as one.
Where are you from?
If ur mum is from England then you dont need a visa, your a dual citizen.
she is a citizen however im not 100 percent we dont live with each other and never had. will that effect it? i can ask her about it .
so would that mean i wouldn't need to apply for a visa ?
also for a working holiday what would your suggestions be for how much to bring?
thanks guys for your replys they have been very helpful!
Oh and I am Australian .

Not necessarily - we don't have enough information yet to determine that. British citizenship is fairly complicated.

Doesn't make any difference if you live with her or not, although you may need to get your hands on her birth certificate at some point. You also need to determine if she is definitely a British citizen. If she was born in the UK to at least one British citizen parent, then she will be a British citizen as long as she hasn't renounced it.
This bit is the important bit:-
Were you born before or since 1 January 1983?
If born since 1 January 1983, you are probably already a British citizen by descent. This means you would be able to apply for a British passport on Form C1, details can be for that. If you were born in Australia, then there's no need to register for citizenship beforehand.
If born before 1 January 1983, then you are probably able to register as a British citizen by descent. for that (look for UKM on that page) - and once you've gone through that process you can then apply for a British passport.

If you're able to obtain a British passport, then you wouldn't need a visa. You also wouldn't need a visa to work in any other EU country with a British passport. And, as far as a working holiday goes you obviously wouldn't have the same limitations as someone on that kind of visa (Youth Mobility Scheme as it's called now) in the UK.
