You have three options to get from New York City to Niagara Falls - fly, bus or train.
Flying is quickest, and can be cheap. Look for flights from New York City to Buffalo. Check sites like Expedia and Travelocity, plus also include Southwest, which won't show up on sites like those. The flight is less than an hour.
Bus is slowest, but cheapest. Last time I checked, it was around $55. It takes 9 - 10 hours, because they stop a lot.
Train takes less time - around 6 hours I think, but probably is closer in price to a plane ($100 - $150).
You could also try finding someone driving. If you are staying in a hostel in New York City, they often have boards with folks looking to share a ride in exchange for splitting the cost of gas.
