Australia - Early/mid 2011

Hey everyone,

I just looking to speak to some people who have been or Austraila, are in Australia or are looking into it.

I think that covers pretty much everyone who reads this particular forum. People prefer to have actual questions they can answer, though, as not everyone has experience with, or knowledge of, the same things.

What is the best way to find a job over there? I'd perhaps like to travel a bit before I got one though. I just need advise...

It's always hard to give helpful advice without knowing more about the person who's asking. Do you have any in demand skills (IT, medical, mining, ...)? Having experience with bar work or as a waiter also is generally found to be very helpful by backpackers. Worst case, just check the notice boards of hostels, or browse the various harvest trail websites to find fruit picking work.

Hey,

I currently work 9-5 in a office. Never done bar work or been a waitress, but if this is found to be really uselfull then I could look into getting a wee part time job on the side? I had thought on this to help with the saving but didint know if it would be worth it.

I'd do fruit picking, not the best at the bugs but i'd need to just get over that somehow. Loads of others do it.... inc my cousin to get her second year visa.

I'm just scared i get over there, run out of money then have to come home... I dont want to come home unless i want to (obv unless my visa runs out)...

Hi, as Sander said, its very normal to not have all the answers. When I went to Australia 07/08 I had a pretty good idea what to expect, but I didn't plan anything. Just booked my flight, and let fate take the rest.

I only realised what I did once I was flying over India, and thought "omg what have I done"

I had a job in a hostel, it was pretty cool. Didn't really pay well, but got free food on events night, and discounted accommodation. I think Sydney is one of the hardest places to get a job. I was suggest having fun in Sydney and looking else where for a job.

I'm not off to New Zealand in December for a year or 2

Hey! I actually went travelling to Australia by myself in 2008 and was literally on my own for about 5minutes....every1's in the same boat so every1 is usually really sociable and friendly!

Its quite easy to find work out there.....same urself some leg work and sign up with a recruitment agency... Kelly services is a good 1!.

Actually going travelling again in 5 weeks Fiji, NZ, OZ n Thailand so if uve got any questions stupid or not....just ask me n ill answer! x

Hey! I'm looking to go around the same time! Going on my own - hopefully for a year...

Let me know if you fancy a chat, we could help each other plan our trips! xx

Hi! I'm planning on doing the same thing and heading out to Australia about Feb time and my own. I need to organise my working visa and flight but I have travelled a little in the past and once you get over the nerves and decide to just go I have found it really easy to meet new people and friends once your travelling. I would like to spend a bit of time travelling before getting a job, Sydney to Cairns maybe to start and then western australia. I'm gonna try and not plan too much and just see what happens!!!

I'd like to stop off in Hong Kong on way over, and then NZ and FiJi islands on way home.

Hi there,

I'm planning to go to Oz for the first time, sometime in maybe april -11. As of now it looks like I'm going on my own. I have no idea how long I can stay, if it will be a few weeks or a few months, but it would be great to have some people to meet up. How far have you come in your plans?

/Ellinor, Sweden.
