I currently live in New Zealand I have a NZ passport, I am looking to travel around Australia and work on Fruit Picking farms. I would like to have my TFN before I enter Australia (one less thing to worry about). how can I go about doing this with minimal fuss.
Not. Since you're not an Australian resident, you have to be "actually in Australia" to apply for a Tax File Number. See at the Australian Taxation Office website. Applying is really swift and easy once you're there though, so no need to worry about it. (You can just use a hostel's address (or poste restante) as the address to which the TFN will be mailed; I think they say it can take up to 28 days, but usually it's there in a week and a bit.)

Just to add that before you have actually received the TFN, you can use the slip you get from the tax office after applying for it to show to employers as proof that they shouldn't deduct extra taxes from your wages. Most should get this right
