Hi all. Me and two friends are going travelling for 12 months in a weeks time. Our first stop is Thailand for 34 days. We arrive in Bangkok first on the 6th October. We are going to book a place to stay for 3 nights online so we have somewhere to go when we land. Now the only thing is, we dont know which area to stay. We are thinking either Khao San road or Sukhumvit road? Can anyone on here recommend somehwere? We want somewhere which is near to everything; Nightlife, Tourist attractions etc. Thanks in advance, Lee.
Since a 12 month adventure has "backpacker" and "budget" written all over it, you should probably stay around Khaosan. This area is home to budget traveler and you will be able to pick up information from like minded people.

How old are you guys? If you are quite young, just out of school or still in school then Khao San Road might do for you. Slightly older then Sukhumvit Road will also offer hotels that you an afford. In the Sukhumvit Road area you can take advantage of the Skytrain, an overhead rail service. In the Sukhumvit Road area you have malls, restaurants, street vendors, supermarkets, travel agencies for tours and lots and nightlife.
No Skytrain in the Khao San Road area. If you need hotel recommendations mention a price range.
If you arrive during the day hours or early evening you can take advantage of the new Airport Rail Link service. This rail service connects the airport with the Pratunam area of Bangkok. If you use this service it is only 15 baht until the end of the year. At the last stop, Phaya Thai you can switch to the Skytrain (a different rail service) which can take you to the Sukhumvit Road area. No Skytrain after midnight. Even if you don't use the Skytrain you can take a meter taxi to other areas. Meter taxi to the Sukhumvit, Nana area, is less than 70 baht from one of the last 3 stops of the rail link.
One thing I noticed. Do you have visas? From the UK you will get a stamp in your passport at the airport allowing you to stay for 30 days. You mention 34 days. Unless you have a 60 day visa (or you intend to visit another country during the 34 days) you will be overstaying.
There is other transportation available from the airport 24 hours a day. One bus that goes to Sukhumvit and Khao San Road areas is the Airport Express Bus. The bus kiosk is located on the first floor by door 8 and at the curb just outside. However, if you can all fit in a meter taxi it will be cheaper for three of you in the taxi and the taxi is half the time and door to door. Have a good address for the hotel not just a name. Pull up the website map page and print a copy. Meter taxi desk is located in two places at the curb not far from the Airport Express. There are desk clerks working there to tell the driver where to go. They will give you a receipt that identifies the taxi, keep that in case you have a problem. A taxi ride to KSR or Sukhumvit will be between 30 minutes and 50 minutes depending on traffic. Bus takes longer.

Thank you Karazyal for all that info. We are all 21 years old. The visa's we have sorted, 60 day tourist visa. I have found a place 10 mintures walk from Khao San road. I was told not to stay too close to Khao San as I saw many reviews of people having trouble sleeping with all the noise from bars, clubs etc at night. The place I have booked for the 3 of us is called Roof View Place and for £7 a night I couldnt say no. I also dowloaded the directions to the hostel to give to the taxi driver once we arrive, which will make it alot easier! Thanks again, Lee.

Just in case you get bored of Bangkok, I just came back from Chiang Mai. That place is a blast too you may want to check it out for a week. Besides being close to Laos you may just want to hop the border......
We are only in Bangkok for 3 nights. We'll be visiting Chag Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Phi Phi islands, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan
