Definate places to go are machu picchu, bolivian salt flats, buenos aires, iguazu falls and definately rio! Best city on earth! Completely mindblowing. Never been to chile or equador but heard lots of good things about quito! Try to go for 2 months if you can, theres so much to see and large distances to cover...amazing continent!

if you are visiting Quito (Ecuador’s capital), don't forget to go to the volcano Pichincha with its twin peaks of Ruco and Guagua.
Don´t know if it helps but If u are planning to come to SA you should not mis "Bolivia" this is one of the most beautiful places on earth and it is also the "Cheapest" country around south America, safe enough, nice, people are great and places outta your expectations. One of the oldest Culture remains in la paz, Bolivia, with an archaeological complex built about 1000 years before macchupicchu?
Bolivia in 187 years up to now being independant, has had more than 225 presidents?
an american dollar gets multiplied here 7 times, and one dollar is enough for you to get a "full meal" with soup and main course?
You can get a lodge in la paz for 3 U$ per night!

as miky said , Bolivia is surely the cheapest place in south america, never been there, i just stayed in the Ecuador and some places in Peru, i suggest in Ecuador to visit Otavalo, it's in the north. then the capital - Quito, if you like beaches go to Montañitas.
In Peru some beaches in the north like Mancora - Piura, the best museum in all Peru
Tumbas - Reales in chiclayo - Lambayeque. then Lima and jungle cities, Pucalpa, Iquitos,
Madre de Dios. to finish in Cusco - Macchupicchu, and Puno- Lago Titicaca. perhaps any aditional info in FB as "chico de las Calles"

Colombia and Lima were my favourites.
In lima on 'the way' to Machu Pichu called Huachachina. Go sandboarding there.
