encouragment? advice? help?

hi, i'm looking for advice and ideas how to start traveling/backpacking in the cheapest most efficient way... i'm 20 years old and i just want someone to get ideas from. there's not really anybody in my life that is encouraging me to do this... I've thought about volunteering on a marine biology research ship, volunteering at a wolf sanctuary. i want to learn about myself and nature and culture in an exotic place and i'm trapped with people who i feel are brainwashed... living their life week by week.. appointments, money, socializing. I don't want anything to do with it any more... I want to figure out who I am and I want to do it away from all of these things. I don't want to feel so dependent on them. I know this probably sounds impulsive and silly, but i literally have visions of being somewhere else where i'm surrounded by snow covered mountains and people with good spirits who don't care about how i look or my past or how much money me or my family has. Someone help!?

Hi glitterfreeze, welcome to the site I've moved your topic into the General talk forum where it will probably get a bit more attention!

Well... first you need to have a target destination. Then, research on how much you should probably save to get there. Consider where you want to stay, your mode of transportation, and what you want to see/do in that place. Your budget is the key to a successful trip. If you have enough, then you'll be okay.

The first place most people your age head to is South East Asia. It's the cheapest and easiest place to travel, and it's very well travelled by backpackers so you will feel pretty safe whilst seeing some amazing things.

If you really want to volunteer, why not check out WWOOF - it's a scheme where you basically work on a farm in return for free board. A few of my friends have done it and say it was a great experience.

Once you decide on a route, check back into the forum for more detailed advice
