Hi! I am right now in Costa Rica, making a documentary about being volunteer here for three months so I wanted all my gear to not limit myself or the documentary but man, I am tired of all these stuff! Good to have but heavy as hell!
I would recommend for a long journey like that to have an 18-200 zoom lense. Perfect for travel since you don't need to change lens, though they are not so tough in low light conditions. That's when I would bring my cheap 50mm 1.8 lens. They cost almost nothing compared to other lenses and are good in low light. Perfect if you want to make some professional looking videos as well and the depth of field is just amazing. Those two would be my first choice and probaby will for my future travels. If you want to use your 18-200 in lowlight, I recommend bringing a monopod(light, easy and small) or look for natural stands for your night pictures like walls, bricks, chairs, tables and so on.
If you want some extra tips I can just recommend bringing extra memory cards and batteries. You don't want to stand on top of a mountain that took you 4hours to climb, just to realize that you forgot to recharge your battery...OR if you lose one, it's good to have backup so you don't have to spend time looking for a store.

I agree with the above, I got a d3100 and took just my 18-200 with me to Thailand earlier this year....and was glad I didn't take anymore than that! I'm travelling for a year as of January and doing a photography internship, still only going to take the one lens, but I agree with taking extra memory cards and a small tripod. It's worth spending the extra on a DECENT compact tripod as the cheap ones are naff and can't hold the weight of an SLR with a zoom lens! And go with sigma over tamron.
Go to Angkor in Cambodia for some breathtaking photo ops!

Yeah, a tripod is good but cost a lot more and is still quite a pain to bring with you. I would recommend take a tripod if you think you will have room and feels that it won't be a problem. If you want to spare weight, space and energy you go for the monopod which is of course not as good but works tremendously good for the low cost and small space. I am using mine now more than the tripod because it's so easy!
Just up to you what you think is the best
