Leaving for a year in Latin America in January - I'll be 29 my boyfriend will be 30. I can't bl00dy wait! :D
I last travelled aged 24 and have been working and saving for this trip ever since. I've also got a good job, almost passed my final Accountancy exams and enjoying life living in London. BUT - for me this is a now or never situation. You have the rest of your life to worry about work and money etc. Take this opportunity and go for it!
My only worry is that I'll enjoy it so much I might not come back
thanks! are you planning on working whilst travelling, I'm wondering if it'll look really bad on my C.V though, that I'm just doing casual work not linked to what I do in the UK- as I dont really want to fix myself into having to find anything too strict! I'm such a worrier!
I personally thinks it looks good on a CV, shows you have a bit of worldly experience and you can say stuff like "I gained invaluable life experience when travelling the world" blah blah... that's what it says on mine anyway
Plus if you've already been travelling, workplaces will be keen to take you on as you're unlikely to go off on a big trip anytime soon. I'd be more worried about someone around 30 who hasn't done much in their life yet - everyone reaches crunch time at one time or the other. And it's either babies or travelling... both of which will be a year off for your boss to worry about
Not planning on working, especially as we'll be in Latin America and my Spanish is not that brilliant. I wouldn't be too adverse to doing a bit of bar work or whatever though if I needed some extra cash. But hopefully my savings will last!
You shouldnt worry about having casual work not linked to your career in the UK, heck you dont even have to put it on your CV but aswell at college we get told that the wider range of skills you have the better and id still want to be travelling when im 30 :D
Travel.... have fun... but don't be one of those too conscious about building your resume.... Coz those travelers can be so uncool... and they develope dellusions of epic proportions.
Is 30 too old? Absolutely not!
I may be biased as a 31 year old, but it is the best time to be going travelling. All that extra life experience and confidence, plus most crucially if you have been working in a decent job for 5/10 years then financially you almost certainly will be far better off than a 21 year old!
As for the CV, I would think it would help, rather than hinder future job opportunities.

The more time ive spent on these message boards the more people i meet who are over 30 and doing a gap year. Im 32 and fly to Bangkok on the 25th October. I sort of have a plan for the first month or so then im just winging and see what happens. I think who i meet will determine where I go really. Bring it on!

what do people think- can I go and 'be free' for a year- work casual jobs, see the world without coming back to reality with a bang and having regrets?!?!
I gave up a good job when I was 29 to go travelling for 18 months. The only regret you will have when you get back will be that you didn't do it sooner as that was my regret.
Having done it once I am now saving to go away again and can safely say I would drop everything and anything to travel again, the feeling of freedom and friendships you will forge far outweighs anything you could achieve workwise.
Your never to old to do anything! Don't regret anything in life!
