My week trip in Oregon

I recently took a week long trip to Oregon with my father, and I received some help/suggestions from this community. I thought this fit better in its own thread due to the misleading title of my other thread (). I'm planning on uploading a link to photos from the trip later in the week.

Sounds like you had a great trip, although, as you said--two trips might be better.

I'd be interested as to which of these trips you would have done first if you had two to do--and would you still include the Columbia River Gorge if you did the coastline trip--or save that for the inland trip to Bend and Crater Lake.

Appreciated all your comments on hotels, hikes, places to eat and places to stay. Lots of times that kind of stuff gets overlooked as we view the great pictures with sunsets and vistas.

Now I guess you'll have to plan your trip to Glacier National Park for next year--and then give us a similar trip report on that one--and a comparison. Tough choices, I know.

Hm... that's an excellent question. I'm not sure I could say which to do first with much conviction. I would recommend doing the trips during the fall season (as I did... or even a pinch later). There aren't as many tourists, and I was told the air is usually less "hazy" with the colder temperature... makes for better landscape pictures.

And to answer your other question, I would do the Columbia River Gorge trip with the inland trip.

As promised, here are the pictures from the trip! Any feedback/questions/comments would be greatly welcomed on the photos.

This was a good first trip to Oregon, but as you suggest if you come back you should split it either Coast, or the rest of Oregon.

If you were going Coast, I'd suggest Flying in to either Portland or San Francisco with the goal of taking Highway 1/101 along the Coast.

For ease lets head North from SF. Head up Highway 101 across the Golden Gate. Go into the Napa Valley, hit up a couple of wineries and get lunch. I love staying in Eureka, be sure to take the old Redwood Highway though. It adds about an hour to the trip so depending on how many stops you make for wineries it could be a long day.

From Eureka you can make it up to Florence in a day, which is my next suggested stop. See the Sea Lion Caves, walk the beach and the Sand Dunes. Visit the new Cheese Factory in Bandon, go out to see Head Rock.

Next stop is Newport, while it's only about 100 miles up the coast, it's a good central point to stop. Lincoln City is also a good stop, but be sure to stop in Depoe Bay either way. Newport has a downtown waterfront area that is a bit touristy, while Lincoln City has a touristy area on the main drag. LC also has quite a few Antique stores to visit.

After that, just head north. Every small town is great so I'd go out of my way to get there. Visit Ocean Side and places like Cape Meares. Do the Cheese Factory tour at Tillamook.

From there you can stay in Cannon Beach, Seaside or Astoria. It's only about 30 miles difference, but I'd personally go with Astoria. From there you can do Seaside, Cannon Beach, Fort Stevens, and Long Beach in a day, then take the two hour drive back to Portland. If you want to round trip it just head down I-5 back to San Francisco.
