My girlfriend and I are backpacking from Cancun to Costa Rica this winter. I have the trip mostly planned out all the way through Nicaragua and I'm looking for some input on where to stay in Costa Rica. We're looking for a place to settle down for about 3 three weeks at the end of our trip (end of march to mid april) and possibly rent a villa. We are intrested in a a place with a nice beach and good surf for beginners. I know there's lots that meet that criteria any input would be great.
Puerto Viejo near Panama border is a very nice place and has a good beach for surfers. You can find trainers who would be happy to teach you.
When you enter the town from direction Limon, if you turn left onto the first street and keep walking on the left there is a very nice guesthouse run by a swiss lady. Very clean and family-like, with separate kitchen for guests - highly recommend it. Room is app $20 a night.
