I'm planning my five weeks of travelling Australia, and I'm starting to realize that I have far too expencive plans. My four biggest plans are currently this:
I've done both and whilst Fraser was great, the whitsundays boat trip absolutely rocked and has been the highlight of my oz trip so far!
Don't miss Fraser Island!!! It is amazing!!
Ugh, everybody keep saying different things to me all the time, I can't make up my mind! I'd love to do both, but at this point that is not an option...
I'd keep the Whitsundays and not go to Fraser Island if the choice was between the two. If you've got 5 weeks you could always hike Fraser Island, the ferry is free for pedestrians and camping is about $7 per night in the National Parks camp grounds.
Since we don't know anything about you it's difficult to recommend what you might like more. Your profile says you are from Norway, but not whether you are male or female.
For most, the fun thing to do on Fraser Island is drive around in the sand, hooning about with your jeep mates. Camping overnight is also fun, but it depends on who you end up with in the jeep. When you sign up you aren't given much choice and Ive heard from some people that they got stuck with boring or annoying folk, My crew was awesome and it's those guys that made the trip for me. There is a fair bit of drinking involved with these trips.
Whitsundays is also a fantastic experience. I'm not sure I'd bother with a day trip, as for me the real experience was sailing out there and mooring over night in beautiful deserted bays, then snorkeling in the daytime, or night if you felt like it. I did my trip on a smaller boat with only 8 others, which makes for a much better trip than some of the cattle boats.
If you are in Aus for 5 weeks and you live in Norway, maybe your plan is to go home via SEA? So how about skipping the expensive dive class in Aus and do that in say Thailand where you can save a load and still have a great dive experience.
