Wasif,
You cannot go from Krabi to BKK via train. You will have to take a bus over to Surat Thani and get the train there. I suggest you just take an overnight bus to BKK. Here is a helpful on buses leaving from Krabi. Price depends on class of service: 400 to 950 baht. The overnight bus saves you one night's accommodation and arrive in BKK early morning. Best time to move around BKK and locate a room.

Most young visitors on a budget head over to the area of BKK. Heaps of low cost accommodation and cheap eats close by. If you are even a bit outgoing, you will find others to travel with. There are literally thousands of backpackers doing just what you have planned: bumping around Thailand spending as little as possible. You won't be alone for long unless that is your choice.

There are fairly cheap flights on : BKK-CNX or another up to Chiang Mai (CM). Of course the bus or train is cheaper, but if time is short a flight might make sense. Many go up to CM for ,

are prevalent in Thailand as you have read. DO NOT leave your common sense in Singapore. Keep your scam radar on at all times. Trust me, you do not want to see the ping pong ball show. Forget tuk tuks, use the Skytrain whenever possible while in BKK.

Good luck with your planning.

Hi !
When are you going cuz I'm
Goin for three weeks as well and Im looking for travel buddy

You already have some good things to consider from Mike. Here are a few more comments.

Three weeks is 21 days. How will you be entering Thailand? By a land entry point or fly in? Unless your country has some different rules arriving overland only gives you 15 days free entry to Thailand. I know that if you fly into Thailand you get 30 days free entry. But I am not sure if Singapore has exceptions similar to border Malaysians entering Thailand. Maybe consider flying into Thailand and leaving Thailand overland as an option.

Transportation is pretty good in Thailand. You have long distance buses, trains and discount airlines. (Discount airlines often have lower weight allowances.) The only scams involving bus rides often originate with rides booked in the khao San Road area. For bus rides get the tickets at a real bus station. In Bangkok a hotel not too far from the Skytrain route makes it easier to get around the city. Many cheap hotels in the lower Sukhumvit Road area too. When you need hotel suggestions always mention your price range.

As far as costs go you should find Thailand cheaper than Singapore. If when you are travelling in Malaysia you find that country reasonably priced you will find Thailand no worse, especially when you factor in the cost of alcohol and nightlife!

On many travel forums visitors from Singapore seem to be a tad more apprehensive on their visits to Thailand than many tourists from other countries when it comes to scams and safety. In Thailand if you come across something that seems too good to be true - consider maybe that it isn't!

Some scams involve gems and gold purchases - if you don't know anything about these items don't buy any! Tuk tuks often are involved in scams - so use a meter taxi! Meter taxis are cheaper than tuk-tuks anyway providing you use the meter and do not bargain the cost of the fare. (Meter starts at 35 baht so remember to check.)

As far as nightlife goes in Bangkok the Nana area of Sukhumvit Road will be cheaper than Patpong. Pattaya will be cheaper than Bangkok for nightlife and hotels.

Over 15 million tourists visited Thailand last year most of them never got a smell of a scam. The worse most of those tourists had happen to them was to pay a little too much for some tourist junk when dealing with street vendors.

hey anina! i'm planning to go early april. so i can experience the songkran festival! maybe we can meetup if you are going at that time?

Hey mike and karazyal, thank you sooo much for those tips!
I'm feeling quite confident now on traveling solo. thailand seems like an awesome place.
Well, this might be a bit hard but i don't eat pork.
so do you think it is easy to find NON pork street vendor or stall?
thanks again!

Wasif,
I am a veggie and did not have any problems. When I eat street, I point to the veggies I want in my stir fry, add a portion of rice and you have a great meal for around 30-40 baht. When you 'eat street' be sure they cook it while you are standing there. Never buy anything that has been sitting in a pan for who knows how long?

There are street carts selling banana pancakes in most places you will visit. Cheap, safe, filling. Try one and I think you will have a new fave street food. Good luck to you.
