Book or eReader?

What would you prefer to take with you during your travels? Is it still the old-school paper book, or have you switched to an ereader?

I read everything on my iphone. Books are cheaper, easier to find and the weight is so much less! The only downside is I now need to wear glasses

I carry real books but I also have my laptop with me and it has a few thousand books on it.

No need for glasses with a 15 inch screen as I can have print as big as I want it. Just as well as the apartment I'm presently staying in has those "light saving" light bulbs and you would need glasses if you tried to read a conventional book in their dingy light.

Ereaders are absolutely fantastic. I read a lot and I used to have to pack 7-8 decently sized books in a backpack -- now I've got 1k+ on a device the size and weight of a paperback. Must-own for any traveler who enjoys reading on long bus rides.

I'm a purist. I need the feeling of turning a page, dogearring, and if a bear gets in my tent overnight, a weighty book (Justin Cronin's "The Passage") just might save my life. Let's see a light E-reader do that!

I've got to agree with JeffsOnVacation. I don't have an e-reader but I can fully appreciate how fantastic they are for people who read a lot, they're really light, loads of memory, no backlight etc. Great invention!

However, I like the weight of a book and the smell of the pages and there's something romantic and authentic about sitting on the beach reading a book rather than the latest gadget. I love how a really used book that's been passed on for years has the cover curling at the corners and the picture on the front faded lol.

So I think I'll be sticking with paperbacks when I go travelling, although the e-readers are a great idea.

I need the feeling of turning a page

I thought I was going to miss that as well in an ereader, but I haven't missed it so far. The only downside is that you can't flip through the pages to finds a particular part

At home I often still read 'real' book, still even buy them, but on holiday or in the train it's simply so convenient
