Thoughts on travelling alone... and young

Hey
I'm a 19 year old girl from Sydney Australia & am at the first stages of planning my trip to Europe.
I want to travel alone, im thinking i’d get the best experience that way? but am also worried about what could go wrong.
I was thinking of doing a contiki tour to start off but i also want time to myself with no itinerary etc...... im also hoping i can still party over there even though ill be solo it would be awesome to make some new friends.. im not shy although im not extremely out going either. Ive heard people are generally really friendly and easy to approach, just wanted some clarification on that.. dont want to get over there and find i have my ipod glued to my ears the entire time... i think my main decision is to either go alone or go with a friend as the trip would be totally different pending on what i decide......Does anyone know if tour companies allow much freedom? And are all hostels safe to stay at for young/small girls? silly question.. not sure!? Ta !

Both travelling alone and with a friend has positive sides and downsides. Generally you can get as much contact with people if you want to, hostels are overall good starting places to meet people (trains and busses as well )
I think it'll be a great experience to travel alone, but beware of possible downsides.

Never travelled by a company, so i don't really have a clue about it, but I guess you still have some time free to spare, especially if you're in cities or when you're for 2/3 days in one place.

Most hostels are safe, but some are just scruffy, or situated in the bit more dodgy part of town.. I've met quite some other girls at hostels who were travelling alone, and it usually a safe environment. Just look things up as you go
