Expensive gear/equipment thoughts

Hi all, relatively new to this forum so I'll briefly introduce myself - I'm a 21 year old male from Manchester, UK, who's going to Australia alone, for about a year, starting in June this year, when I'm flying to Sydney with a two day stop-over in Dubai. I cannot wait.

I have been travelling with similar gear (sans the iphone, which I do without) for years without any problem, and strongly follow the reasoning that things like this are tools; coddling them and leaving them at home is counterproductive when the entire reason for having them is to be able to use them. Good insurance with a high coverage - preferably separate for the camera and the laptop - makes for peace of mind, and beyond that just use common sense, don't flaunt them, and enjoy them fully while travelling.

(Also: make certain you encrypt your laptop's harddisk before leaving; makes you feel much better when you know that even if the laptop gets stolen, all your private information on it will remain private.)

You're damn right there Sander. Make no sense buying said equipment if you're only going to take photos of the inside of your house.

Who do you insure your equipment with? I've seen a few companies crop up in several forums claiming to be the best, and it can be quite confusing who actually is best. I'm presuming you're UK based with this question.

Thanks,
Tom

I'm based in the Netherlands unfortunately (if you hover over someone's name just above their post, after a few seconds a small window will appear with basic profile information, including where they're from - or you could click through to their full profile of course), and my current (business) travel insurance only covers trips up to six months, so would be useless for you anyway. I used to have backpacker insurance for 2+ years which covered my laptop and camera separately though, and I suspect equivalent policies do exist in the UK. (You might have to pay more for it; as with everything, you usually get what you pay for.)

Thanks for that Sander, big help! I'll get looking asap.
Tom

Wouldn't hesitate to take the stuff with me. Obviously use common sense, and in the US we get such things covered with our homeowners (or renters) policy.

Don't take it if you can't afford to lose it, but odds are you won't have problems if you are smart and aware of it.
