I stayed in Karon and don't recall seeing any girlie bars so you should be fine there; it's much more pleasant than Patong which is pretty seedy.
If you are looking for good, reasonably priced accommodation I'd recommend

We really want to avoid places where there are too many girlie bars. For female travellers, it's a really horrible scene.

Maybe you ought to avoid Phuket entirely if you are afraid of what people think of you if you are around bars. Everyone knows that many single female tourists choose Phuket because they can purchase the affection of local Thai men. Besides Phuket is expensive too! If you avoid Phuket no one will "wink and nod" about what you might have been up to in that city when you go home.
(Don't believe me then Google up "female sex tourists Phuket Thailand!")
You won't see naked Thai women on beaches like you do all over Europe! You won't see Thai women hanging out of windows half naked like you do in Amsterdam too! (Not to mention all of the dope places there!)
Check out Hua Hin where there are fewer bars. Easy to get to from Bangkok by train, bus or private van.

I would avoid Phuket and hit the area instead. Cheaper, great beaches, no girlie bars. Take a look at , , , There are many others just a short ferry ride from Krabi town. You can fly into Krabi and use it as a base to visit the many islands close by. leave everyday from Railay to the hundreds of islands off the Krabi coast. Good luck with your planning.
Yeah, everyone I've met in Thailand always says they much preferred Koh Phi Phi to Phuket. I've only met one dude that liked Phuket and he went there to do Muay Thai training. So I would definitely go along with vegasmike6's advice.
