Rio de Janeiro is one of the best place to go as it's feasible economically and socially.
So that's might be the place you choose either,Ilhabela, in the state of Sao Paulo, on Brazil's largest maritime island, which is popular for both land and sea sports and recreation.
I'm actually in Brazil now on a 3 month trip from the US. If you're after beaches, there are some good less touristy ones between Rio and Sao Paulo. I thought the beaches in Rio were a bit overhyped and dirty. I'm staying in Minas Gerais for the duration of my trip to play in the Atlantic Rainforest, which extends from the coast in the southeast inland. Generally, I've found anything not in the city is much cheaper. There are a lot of neat historical sites and towns to see in between the cities. I'm going to the Faire Hippie this weekend, which is the largest open market in Latin America, located in Belo Horizonte, MG.
