We are not sure what the best route from Puno, Peru to La Paz is. Can anyone tell?
Bus is the best way to go. I went from Puno to Copacabana where I stayed a couple of days, and from there to La Paz, but I am sure you could get a direct bus.
I generally didn't book ahead in Peru or Bolivia but just bought tickets at the bus station or asked at my hostels which bus to take and they would often arrange a ticket for me. When you get to the bus station you will find there are dozens of bus companies and people all trying to sell you a ticket. Its cheap too.
Since there is a border crossing you will have to get off of the bus in Peru, get your passport stamped and walk across the border to Bolivian customs, then get you passport stamped again before meeting the bus there. But the best bit is in Bolivia between Copacabana and La Paz where you have to get off the bus, buy a ferry ticket and cross a lake by boat, and then wait on the other side while they bring the buss over on a barge!
Thank You for Your advice. We have to get from Puno to La Paz the same day, so maybe it is best not to go to Copacabana on the trip.
