that's a difficult period of the year:
april:
- south is hot, gets cloudy with some rain
- north temperature can potentially be high (with dry heat) as well already, it changes y/y
- himalaya: low altitude mild tempr / high alt too cold
may:
- south is hot with more rain
- north: hottest month is may, dry heat
- himalaya: low altitude mild temp / high alt too cold
june:
- monsoon in south and north too, south getting a more rainfall
- himalaya: too much rain may cause landslides / high alt: roads are just opening
all in all - i would say you can spend april in the south hoping to get some sunshine on the beach and head gradually up north. although you may not escape the heat at the end.

north will be pretty hot at that time of year. i have never been to south at this time.. but i guess comparatively south will be lil cooler than north. then again what places do you want to go and checkout.

Thats some great weather advice, I had figured I could split up the trip. I guess as my first time to India I want to see the main sights; Varnassi, Jaipur, Agra, Kerela- weather permitting) pondicherry.
I don't mind hot dry heat but wet and humid may make it tricky
India is an amazing place, full of life and vibrancy. We went in February and spent 2 months travelling from South West to North West. Jump on a flight to Kerela and work your way to the top..its worth it and can be done! The furthest we reached was were the ganges met the himlayas..beautiful sight.
The south is not like one story according to weather! In Kerala is always a rain possible, but April is generally the driest month in the year! And the hottest, still rain is possible. There is a small monsum in Kerala at the end of February till march. Tamil Nadu has it's own weather and monsun seasons.
In my opinion the rain is very beautifull and to be enjoyed!!! But if you are on a narrow schedule its maybe be annoying if you want to do sightseeing or moving a big backpack around ... but often it's heavy short rain (from June to August its more often more than a few hours) and afterwords nice clear weather with blue sky and big with clouds. I like it a lot ... but yes it can be humid at this time ;o)
For the north I am agree with what is said!

I feel, you should first decide the places you want to see in India.
Weather should not be a big factor and, as others have told, the entire sub-continent will be very hot. If you take precautions, heat might not bother you too too much.
Hi,
At the end of April, both north and south India would have the same climate (South -I'm referring to Tamil Nadu since I live in Salem, Tamil Nadu. It seems that summer has already started here as it's very hot nowadays). So it would be no difference travelling to those places.
