You may just have to buy 1 year for now , and then near to the time that it expires just take out another year.

It doesn't work like that. In this instance if you had to make a claim you would have to show evidence that you went back home before returning (on your new insurance policy). The actual number of days spent away from home matters.
So how have other australians on working holiday visa's organise thier travel insurance??
