Any recommendations for a backpacker hostel in Melbourne? I am 33 and travelling alone and first time staying at a backpacker. Have heard a lot saying that backpackers are mostly for youngsters and tend to be a little noisy even if its a 4 bed dorm.

I stayed at a few hostels in Melbourne about 3 years back now. The elephant one (cant remember the full name) and Discovery Backpackers didnt have much atmosphere.
We then moved to All Nations Backpackers which, in the year I was away, I found the most unclean, loud, bedbug ridden hostel of the lot. Having said that, it was the most fun of all too and I would recommend that for meeting people. Lots of people working in Melbourne stay here so there is always someone to talk to 24 hours a day if you wish.
If this doesnt sound like your cup of tea, maybe try one of the others. You might find they have a more welcomeing atmosphere these days.
Thanks for the reply, think would probably stick to backpacker since its the only place which will allows me to make friends, but will get a single room
Or there's places on gumtree.com.au with short term lets - sometimes you can find places for a week or two on there. Although it is a bit more hassle than just rocking up at a backpackers, you could meet some good friends in a shared house situation.

If you're the sort that would pay more for location, check out Formule 1 hotel, it's right smack in the middle of melbourne central, on Elizabeth street.
The last time I stayed there with 2 others, I think it cost us 33AUD a night each (99AUD for the whole room). Room was small but clean and not ugly. It's got a table, bathroom attached and a television. Fresh towels everyday but your room wont be made up.
it was quiet, not noisy at all and a great great base. lots of walking and shopping to do around the area (go to nearby swanston street!) and it's easy to go everywhere else from the centre.
