Ah I left for Oz on my own at 19 too! Best thing I'd ever done!! You'll meet tons of solo travellers so don't worry about that... and nearly everyone I met out there who had began travelling with a friend has spent a good few months away from each other going solo and doing their own thing!
There's no where easier also than the East Coast to meet people! It's the backpacker hub really
If you go Sydney, stay a week or so in Manly (just a ferry ride over) at Boardriders hostel... I planned to go there for 4 days and ended up staying 6 months =]
Don't be nervous... once it begins, you'll realise it's the easiest thing!

i think its the waiting that is the hardest thing..oh well not long left now!
