There have been a number of threads here in the past that may give you some ideas on a schedule etc. I may suggest you scan a few of them rather than having us repeat ourselves. I will just reiterate that you need to plan for the weather. Anywhere from Virginia north will be pretty cold during the winter months. Try to stick to the south from Dec-March. By the same token a woman from the UK will find August in Georgia to be like entering the gates of Hell. So keep north during the hot summer months.
You can no doubt rent a van and fix it up with an air matress/sleeping bags for cheap overnights. But be aware that you probably need to rent a camp site and they are not as cheap as they used to be, around $25-$30 a night I believe. But it's sure a lot safer than a Walmart parking lot.

I you want to meet up and get a lift with us for abit that would be no problem at all. The more the merrier.
Where are you planning to travel? We are aiming to start in Newyork and then end up in San Fran. Sort of doing a U shape journey, lol.
