I have just read "Discovering Beautiful: On the Road to Somewhere". It is the tale of a young English guy who takes himself off to America for a month long vacation, and ends up on a four year journey of travel and adventure, hitchiking and riding freight trains through the US and Mexico.
Good thread. My classic would be "The Alchemist" by Paulo Cohelo, love that book.
Also love works by Rolf Potts "Vagabonding" which was an inspirational read and im currently reading his new one "Marco polo didnt go there".
I've read 'The Alchemist' and enjoyed that, although I always find a book more enjoyable when I know it is a true story.
Actually I bought 'Vagabonding' at the same time I bought 'Discovering Beautiful' and it is next on my list to read. Just googled 'Marco Polo Didn't Go There' and think I might have to buy that one too.
My favourite travel book is written by the world's greatest travel writers Paul Theroux, William Dalrymple, Kari Herbert, Colin Thubron and many more writers.....

I have also read "The Alchemist" and enjoyed it so much. I don't know how my time passed and i kept reading this book. You must read this book this is nice one. Even i have read so many books but i read William Dalrymple"In Patagonia, this is a metaphysical exploration of "the uttermost part of the earth". It is in the eyes of many his best, though it was not his most commercially successful (Songlines outsold it many times over). But it is probably the most influential travel book written since the war. You must read it....
Not a specific book or single writer, but most books of Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Ted Simon, Michael Palin and Redmond O'Hanlon. And of course the cyclist Frank van Rijn, 'worldfamous in the Netherlands'
Dervla Murphy is best known for her 1965 book Full Tilt: Ireland to India With a Bicycle, about an overland cycling trip through Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. She followed this by volunteering with Tibetan refugees in India and Nepal, and trekking with a mule through Ethiopia. Murphy took a break from travel writing following the birth of her daughter, and then wrote about her travels with Rachel in India, Pakistan, South America, Madagascar and Cameroon. She later wrote about her solo trips through Romania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, South Africa, Laos, the states of the former Yugoslavia, and Siberia. In 2005 she visited Cuba with her daughter and three granddaughters.
Murphy has normally traveled alone and unaided, without luxuries and depending on the hospitality of local people. She has been in dangerous situations; for example, she was attacked by wolves in the former Yugoslavia, threatened by soldiers in Ethiopia, and robbed in Siberia. However, she described her worst incident as tripping over cats at home and shattering her left arm.

I also loved Dervla Murphys Full Tilt. What an amazing woman to have done what she did at that time.
Other favorites.
Mark Twain, (of Hucklberry Finn fame) Roughing it. His adventures traveling across America, fighting off indians and his failed attempt at finding gold that lead to his writing career. Also Innocents Abroad. A really funny look as Twain travels through Europe.
Bill Bryson is always good.
