Hong Kong is about 1050 miles, Shanghai over 1800 and Tokyo over 2800 miles, so all expensive to get to from Bangkok.
AirAsia is not cheap like it used to be. Check other airlines which can sometimes be about the same price when AA have added all their extras.
You could bus, train or fly down to Penang and then make your way through Malaysia to Singapore then hop on a plane across to Medan and make your way through Indonesia. Lots and lots to see.
Penang Malaysia will be cheaper than Hong Kong and Singapore. You can use train from Bangkok or fly to get to Malaysia. By train is a long ride - I have done it a couple times.
I have booked hotels at discount from Bangkok travel agencies. Once I used the Panda in Hong Kong at a good discount and another time I used the Imperial Hotel also at a good discount with vouchers from Thai travel agencies. These are rooms off season and not weekends. Some Thai travel agencies will run special packages with room and plane ticket at good price. Doesn't hurt to check out a few places in Bangkok when you are there. I also used vouchers from Thai travel agencies for hotels in KL and Singapore.
I hate to promote Air Asia again,( i have a love hate relationship with them) but they really do have amazing deals. I don't know why Cyberia thinks the add ons make it the same as other flights. I think he likes to say that without actually checking. I just looked at flights from K/L to Tokyo and they have them for around $350 return! Even when you add baggage and a meal about $40, you are flying dirt cheap. I flew last year from K/L to Christchurch for about the same. Looks like China is a good deal too at about $100. So now just get yourself down to K/L, easy just jump on the train. Penang is interesting and well worth a stop on the way down, then bus from Penang to K/L with a stop in Cameron Highlands.

It's definitely possible to get good deals with Air Asia as long as you book in advance and look out for specials and sales. A friend of mine has just booked several flights with them for his trip around SE Asia in November, all for dirt cheap.
I've just been on the Air Asia website and a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul on the 6th September comes up at £107 one way, £200 return, which isn't too bad. Seoul is a great place to visit for a few days and you could explore elsewhere in Korea too.
Otherwise Malaysia and Myanmar could be options.

Out to India/Thailand etc again in June. Around September I would like to fly to somewhere I haven't been before. (Will have been to India, Indo. Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia). Im thinking somewhere like Shanghai or Seoul. Hong Kong or Tokyo would be amazing but ive heard they are quite expensive cities and im on a budget. Ive seen most flights around Asia are roughly £300 with Air Asia. Does anyone have any recommendations?

hi I suggest that you can fly from Bangkok to Phuket and play for two days and then fly from Phuket to Hong Kong.Travel in China for a week or so.And then return home. BTW how much is your budget?If it is not a lot of shopping, this trip down about 800 pounds (including air).

I wouldn't say there was a huge backpacking scene when I was there in 2009 but it's getting more popular as a destination and there's loads to see and do. I stayed in a hostel called Open Guest House which was really great; there are dorms and private rooms available and a decent social area.
If you do go to Seoul make sure you do a day trip up to the DMZ on the North Korean border - I thought it was fascinating and well worth it.
