hi guys!
im looking to visit New Zealand sometime bewteen October - January. Looking for some helpful info. Is there a specific month that is better to go. Which part of New Zealnd is worth seeing more, North or South? Are hostels safe in New Zealand? Any one looking to go there end of this year?!!!
I like all of New Zealand though most seem to go to Queenstown and Milford Sound, south in the South Island, which is a pity. NZ has a lot of nice little towns which are untouched by globalisation and McDonalds. Christchurch is still suffering from it's earthquake so not as good as before.
I have relations in Auckland and they often spend Christmas Day on the beach. I've been three times and go January - February. Weather can be nice and sunny but you can also get rain.
You can get around by bus, coach and train, and ferry between the islands, but I found car the best as it gets you where you want to go and when you want to go. They drive on the left there.
A car means you can get cheaper out of town B&B's, Guest Houses and the like. Hostelbookers, hostelworld and the like have accommodation. I have never felt unsafe at any time in NZ, but of course, there are criminals everywhere.
You can fly in one island and fly out of the other. You can also stop off, say in Asia, on the way out and back to break what is a very long journey.

Do you have some sort of grudge against the accommodation booking part of this website? There is a great big button at the top of the page that says "accommodation" It works just as well as the two you mentioned and if you book through it, a small percentage goes to keep this site, the one YOU are using running.
Anyway back to the OP's question.
October can be very wet. Nov though Feb is high season. Things get more expensive and more busy, but really seeing NZ in sunshine is worth it.
The only time Ive been robbed traveling was in a NZ backpackers. Having said that, I'm 90% sure it was the English guy in my dorm! Unfortunately NZ is no different from anywhere else these days and you should always take some precautions and be alert.
If you do a search on this website, you'll find loads of threads about what to see on both the north and south island. At the moment there are some really cheap flights available from the north to the south. So if you planned it, you could easily do both.
in march earlier this year, i went to south island with my husband! we rented a car from shoestring rental and drove from christchurch to lake tekapo to wanaka to milford sound and te anau, then back up to queenstown, then franz josef and finally kaikoura (via hanmer springs). this took about 15 days, as we stayed in some of the places for 2-3 nights.
we loved the sights in south island. we stayed at backpackers' hostels (YHA mostly) and they were safe, in our opinion. then again, we always took the double rooms.
i've had friends who have gone to both north and south island, and most of them tell me that if u're pressed for time, just do the south island as there's more to do and see, i think! but we're intending to do north island on our next trip anyway!
cheap flights between north and south island or within N/S islands can be bought from jetstar.com - it would save a lot of time if u don't have much time to drive around or take a bus. but that said, driving in NZ is awesome. it's like driving into a picture everywhere you go. so beautiful.

I went to New Zealand a few years ago and worked in the north island in the ruahine ranges and then I travelled both islands. Both were fantastic but for me the South Island is more spectacular and untouched.
The top places I think you must not miss are the abel tasman national park at the top of the south island theres some amazing walks along the coastline there or if ur feeling adventurous I kayaked along the coast and got right up close to some seals!
I also loved the little town of kaikora, I stayed in the YHA hostel there, my room was just across the road from the sea and across the bay I could see the snow capped mountains, amazing views right from my bed at sunrise and sunset!
I think any time of year is great to visit just depends what you want to do.
I am a young girl, travelling alone staying in dorm rooms and never felt at all in danger, i found the kiwis the friendliest people iv ever met.
As u can see I a little bit fell in love with New Zealand and cant wait to return one day!
