I have two weeks or so, from 4 August to 19 August to plan something in the South of China (because I have to go to a conference in HK on the 20th). What are the real highlights of South China? Ideally my mode of transport would be high speed rail.
I would love to visit Kunming in Yunan. It has the most minority populations (around 50) and they have the most beautiful flowers.
If you are in HK, you should definitely do a day trip to Macau, to start.
I agree with the poster above: Yunnan would be a good place to visit, because it's much cooler than the rest of Southern China (it's up in the mountains). Yangshuo, or Guilin, are also popular with backpackers, and not too far from HK. But if this is your first visit to China, you might want to go to Shanghai. It's an exciting city, with lots to do, if you like nightlife or shopping especially. And there are several cities nearby to visit, such as Suzhou and Hangzhou. However, in August, it is VERY hot.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I was curious about Kunming and am even more so now. I had never thought of Macao - but will now! Thanks very much
Steve
Hi steve, I have been twice in South China. If you are looking for best countryside places, you should take a stop in Lijiang (area), Lugu Lake, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yangshuo and Ping'an rice terraces. Best of luck in your planning.
