I've been trying to find maps and articles that are informative enough, but I haven't been very successful. I don't get the zones!!! Could someone explain them to me or colaborate with a great link to an article and a map?

What do you mean by zones?
There is the parking zone for central London where you have to pay to park your car there.
There are zones 1-6 for public transport where you buy a ticket for one or more zones and you can only use it to travel in those.
Others?
If it's the zones for the underground, you should be able to find those easily on the underground maps. This one shows the zones:

yes! I think it was the underground zones I was talking about. Everyone goes on about "staying in zone 1, or 2" and I was clueless. Now it just makes sense. The closer to the center, the more expensive it is to live there... am I right? Anyway, that's another story. But thanks for the information!

You're welcome. You can stay relatively cheaply (for London standards) in hostels. I've stayed at two: one by St Paul's Cathedral and one near King's Cross. There are some interesting alternatives because of the Olympics too, if you're happy to camp in London (yes, camp)! If you stay further out, you have to factor in the cost of getting around by public transport and it isn't that cheap. My parents live in Zone 5 and, when I go by tube into London from there, it costs a small fortune! Let me know if you need any further info.
I appreciate so much those last tips you gave me. I was really worried that staying far from the center would kill my budget with public transportation!!
The price of public transport in London can kill your budget. If you're there for a while and using the tube then think about getting an Oyster Card (a rechargable card for public transport). It's slightly cheaper and so much quicker and easier. I don't live in London but I always use my card when I am there.

Definitely get the Oyster Card.
If you are going to be there for a week or two stick plenty of money on it.
You could always sell the card, with its remaining credit as you leave the country or just pass it on.
