hello
Don't miss out Lima:

Cusco is about 10,800 above sea level and can be hard on tourists if they stay there for a week or more.
Cusco has a number of travel agents and can arrange some good day trips as well as onwards travel. I would travel around Peru if I were you, Nazca lines, Amazon, various towns, etc.
Try hostelbookers for accommodation.

The way you're phrasing that comes out all wrong. Going to Cuzco straight away when coming from sea level can be really hard for the first 2-3 days, due to lack of altitude acclimatization (which is why stopping over at a halfway point (altitude-wise) like Arequipa is generally recommended).
After the first few days you'll be acclimatized though, and will be absolutely fine, no matter how much longer you stay.
To the original poster: The rainy season will have started in December, so be prepared for that. I also wouldn't call Cuzco very representative; its city center is a full of tourists and those trying to take advantage of them (you'll learn to say "non, gracias" reflexively), much more so than any other place in Peru. Its surrounding countryside is very interesting, though, and within the city I was quite enamored of the steep and narrow cobblestone streets to the north of the Plaza de Armas.

Hola! i agree with Sander. First days in Cusco could be a little tough flying in from sealevel but after a day (or two) this will wear off...coca tea is good for acclimatizing as well!
The neighborhood going up from the plaza is called San Blas. It can seem like a maze at times with all those small little streets but this way you do get to discover many quaint little restaurants and cafes.
You can make a lot of interesting daytrips from Cusco to enjoy the countryside of the Sacred Valley, visiting traditional markets and archeological sites such as Tipon and Pisac.
Puno is a great place to visit as well as it sits right on the edge of Lake Titicaca..with its gorgeous scenery and indigenous culture. Highly recommended!
