Hi everyone
You should head up by bus to see chaing mai and pai, and then afterwards you can take extremely cheap local busses to chaing rai which will be the next big city before the golden triangle. the golden triangle is up where laos thailand and myanmar all meet..when i went there i realized there was not much to see at the golden triangle other than looking at the triangle for 10 minutes so i hitchhiked to the boarder crossing about 2 hours south and crossed into laos the next day. It was an awesome adventure and if i never made my way to the golden triangle i never would have crossed over into laos. If you like northern thailand you will absolutely love laos.
was last Year in chiang mai. great place to be. we took the overnight train from bangkok ( really freezy> take a good scarf with you) and booked a non touristik tour in chiang mai. was with elephant trekkin ( 1,5 hours), bat cave, secret waterfall, sleepover in a local village in a bamboo house, white water rafting. was every baht worth, didnt meet other tourists during the tour at all, only at the white water rafting.
