Volunteering in India

I am travelling on my own to Nepal then India this Autumn. In Nepal I am living/ working in a monastry. In India I am hoping to volunteer with children for about a month. Does anyone know a company which is fairly cheap and really gives something back to the community?!

there are many NGO's in india doing a good job for kids.... i will look around for some and let you know ...

Thanks I have found a few, but it's hard to tell which ones are good from the websites!

Isn't that the truth. It's a disgrace how many rip off companies have jumped on the bandwaggon that are just middlemen taking huge profits. I was also shocked at how many so called charities had sprung up in Nepal that offered places for volunteers and were really just a shame for a profit making scheme.

are you looking in the north or south India?

I am hoping to volunteer in Delhi, but definitely in northern India

Hi there,

if you change your mind and decide you want to work in the South I strongly suggest you Sampark. I volunteered with them for a month last year, and it is really incredible the work they are doing for communities in small villages in Karnataka.
The NGO is set in Bangalore (which is already a great place) where they have a few projects for the education of children of migrant workers. Mainly though they work with Koppal (a night ride on the train) where they have a lot of projects going on, from the empowerment of women through microfinance to lowering the drop out rate at school of poor kids and so on.
This is their website http://www.sampark.org/, even though it's quite outdated now - they do need someone to take care of that as well.

Anyway I hope this was helpful to you, let me know if you need any other info.

Hi Carol,

Thank you for this! I think I will be staying in Northern India, but thank you anyway.

Elisa
