I've always been the adventurous type and now I've decided i want to further it by taking a year in Australia. My cousins had done it and they loved it. I am currently a student and i'm expecting to go to university in September to study Civil Engineering. Though i'm not 100% on this option and i do not want to waste money on something i might not enjoy. I can defer my entry and take a year out and head to Australia to spend some time thinking about what i want to do and gaining new experiences.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing! money wise, you have to have either $5000AUD when you arrive in the country or a little less if you have a return ticket or a ticket out of the country. i'm saving around £500 a month and i'm concerned it won't be enough, i guess it just depends on how much you want to be working when you get there. Also Sydney is so expensive so that's important to consider when you decide where you're going.
The Visa and jobs i'm still trying to find out about myself. it seems like hospitality jobs are the general go to for backpackers so maybe some bar experience would be a good idea? and there's fruit picking and farm work.
Other than that i'm just as much in the dark as you are! but hopefully maybe that helps you out a bit in terms of money
Its difficult to put into perspective about everything i will need. I work in a bar at the moment in Nottingham so that experience will be useful.
Money wise, thats a lot more than a thought. Why so much money when you first arrive? I understand you need some aside for when you want to come home and a bit to get you started whilst looking for work.
Accommadation wise, what do you know is best? Youth hostels will be used pretty much entirely.

I guess they just need to know that you can afford to stay in the country for that long. From what i've read it seems to be mixed on how many people actually have to give proof of what money they have, but obviously it's better to go prepared for that question, being turned away would be a massive nightmare!
It is really hard to even start planning because there's so many things to consider. You'd need a working holiday visa which you have to pay for, and also you have to take a course (only a few hours) to be able to serve alcohol in Australia and you'd also have to pay for that, and apparently you have to take a different course to serve in new south wales. And then you'd probably want some travel insurance so you need to add all of that into the costs. It soon adds up!
Accommodation, i'm looking at hostels as they seem to be the cheapest and also where i'll be able to meet more people, but i've read a lot of people discussing house sharing and things like that, couch surfing is an option as well. It's really down to how much you want to spend and your preferences. Personally, i want to meet as many people as possible so hostels sound perfect, and a lot of people find work through hostel notice boards etc.
No idea how long it takes to get a job! that's worrying me because i don't want my money to run out I'm hoping if i save as much money as possible, it means i wont be as stressed about working when i first get there.
