My two friends and i are planning a trip to Tunisia next month. We are thinking of visiting Tunis, Dougga, Carthage, Kairouan, Eljem, Tozeur, Douz, Ksar Ghilane and Matmata in two weeks. We are also thinking of doing 2 or 3 day desert trekking. we might think about hiring a car and a driver if the cost is reasonable, within our budget. i really appreciate if you can provide me recommedations on following info:
-quick and cheap transportation from one city to the others
-or a reliable driver and the appoximate price per day or per week
- a good tour agency for desert trekking either from Douz or Tozeur.
- accommedations in Tunis.
There is a good train service which goes through the major cities. It does not run many times a day though.
We travelled a long a road and the guide said that if you went into the desert (either side of the road at that point), just one mile, you could get lost and never find your way out again. It was totally believable.
We did go a little way at one point and unlike some I did not fancy wearing the old robes provided but after about 90 minutes when we went back to the coach, my skin was noticeably darker. There was a nomad tribe there and if we wanted, we could have gone away with them into the desert for a week and been picked up by the tour a week later. No one accepted the offer.
It is not just hot there but it sucks the water out of your skin. We saw a man collapse and our guide and driver checked him out. He was a local man who had become dehydrated while walking too far under the hot sun (this was October). So if you do do any independent travelling, take plenty of water.
El Djem, I got a train to the local station and the old arena is close by. There is another historic site not far away whose name escapes me but the local taxi drivers did not have a clue, so I never found it.
There are travel agents about in the main towns (where the train stops). I found the tours quite cheap.
Tunis is quite expensive (and there is not a lot there). There is an Accommodation link at the top of the page. If you can't find what you want there, try lowcostholidays for accommodation.
