Mature English female wants to travel Euorope alone.

I have lived in Africa for 34 years but last year I was widowed. I have lost track of the outside world and want to travel Europe, alone. I had thought of buying a motor home and stopping for as long as I want wherever I want, possibly working to learn languages. I simply want to be alive again and meet people. I have no time frame, just the time it takes me to sell up here.

no need for input just do it you wont regret it

Would motorhome be a bit isolating compared to hostels, if the goal is meeting people? Just an idea. :-)

I agree to a certain extent but I intend to be away for a long time. Will load up motorbike and cycle to sight see and no doubt will hang about where travelers meet. I want to meet the locals as well. Africa is great but I have missed so much.

A question I would like opinions on is, as an older person would I be ignored. I hate hanging out with people my age.

I will take that as a yes.

I think it's more a matter of the people who frequent this forum not having an idea about what it's like to travel Europe in a motorhome (or even by motorbike), so we don't know the kind of people you'd meet, so we don't know their attitudes.

(Generally the inhabitants of this forum skew backpacker, so travel Europe by train, and stay in hostels. There, I could say that you'd at least get to talk to plenty of other travellers, as long as you pick hostels which have a communal kitchen (and thus allow for self-catering) and ideally a common lounge, both of which are not that common in European hostels. (varies wildly by country))

Hi Sander,
Thanks for your comments. I do plan to spend a long time on the road so creature comforts have to be considered. No doubt the route to go is parking in camper parks which means screaming kids etc. Being English I can travel Europe without permit problems etc. and as I was a chef in my working life I would not mind staying and working a few months if I found a restaurant or family hotel which would let me stay just for the experience.

Having met and helped many people traveling Africa when we had hotels on Lake Kariba, I can see how my situation is different. It's in the future but I thought that I would put out feelers.
Thanks again,
Sandra.

Personally i think the only way you will be ignored is if you want to be, if you put yourself out there and make the effort to connect with other travellers i'm sure you will have no problems, i love to speak to people of all ages just to hear their views and perspectives, also i think it is a good idea you have for the Motorhome, it gives you all the benifits of free travel, allowing you the certain level of comfort you may desire in you mature days. Another bonus would be the sanctuary of your own space, something which i find is sometimes required when travelling for any extended period.

In short, with the advantage of not having to worry about the Scheghen agreement, id encourage you to go for it.

Best of luck,

Andy.

Hi Andy,
Whats the Scheghen agreement?
I have traveled alone before, when I was younger and I am not shy about joining in with people. When the time comes I will probably hire a motor home and have a trial run.
Thanks for your comments, great help.
Sandra.
