Are you living in the UK? Is the GBP1000 just spending money of does your airfare come out of that too?
It really depends on where you want to go, how long and what you expect to do. If it's your first trip, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia is a good one to cut your teeth on. Travelling only, you could easily make do with GBP25 per day if you sleep in hostels and eat street food - and that could get you on a round trip flying in and out of Bangkok and travelling up north to Chaing Mai, through Laos and into Vietnam, down to the south and through Cambodia and back to Bangkok. Forty days (exactly GBP1000) would just about do it - I have no idea if you'd be able to work there (probably not) but I'm sure you'd be able to link up with others doing a similar trip. The slow boat from Chiang Khong to Luang Prabang is a great way to meet international travellers.
Perhaps you need to save up a bit more first - but well worth waiting for!

You must tell me what is the time you can spend on this trip how many day? I would advise you some information when you arrive Vietnam:
Transport: choose bus
Stay: hostel, hotel mini,..
Eating: ordinary restaurants and street food
Jobs: you can contact bars, restaurants, clubs, ... to for a Job (though very difficult if you do not have the experience or the type of identification)
You should choose travel by road SE Asia : Hochiminh City go by bus Phnom Penh (Cambodia) – Siem Reap – Poipet Gate – Thailand - Laos.

Thailand does not want foreigners taking jobs away from their citizens. Foreigners can not legally work without a work permit and that permit is not easy to get. Wages are lower than what you make in England, hours are long and the labor not easy, that is if you could work legally! Other nearby countries may not want you taking jobs away from their citizens.
Save up your money. Buy round trip ticket to a major city like Bangkok. Round trip is cheaper than two one way flights. (Some one way flights on full service airlines can cost close to the cost of a round trip ticket. Do the math for plane tickets!) Travel between Cambodia, Laos and Malaysia overland is not expensive. There are discount airlines flying between nearby countries too. Returning to your arrival city is not that expensive and probably cheaper than a one way flight from a different country.
For a first time visit to this part of Asia, my advice is to save up your money. Stay for a shorter amount of time overseas. My advice is to go for less than 30 days. Have an end date for your flight home. Singapore will be more expensive than Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia. Thailand is more "user friendly" for tourists, in my opinion. Thailand has good local transportation, good food, hotels in all price ranges and tourism is encouraged and supported.
Research the visas required for the countries you intend to visit. Besides foreigners working and taking jobs away from locals being frowned upon - these countries want you to have enough money to support yourself while visiting their countries!
You need to work up a budget of sorts so you know how much you can afford for hotels and other expenses - after paying for plane tickets! Then you will know how much spending money you have overseas. Not enough to live on without sleeping on the street - stay for a shorter amount of time and maybe visit fewer countries too!
Your plane tickets from the UK can be more expensive for some months and cheaper other months. Most expensive time in this part of Asia is high season, late November through January the highest prices for hotels and flights from overseas. Christmas holiday period being the most expensive.
