Regular travel insurance only covers for you trips of up to 3 (sometimes 6) months, but there's specific backpacker insurance which covers long term travel, yes. Travellerspoint has a partnership with , which offers this, but there's many different companies offering similar deals.
As a UK citizen, you are covered for basic immediately necessary health insurance while in Australia (through ), but it's still generally advisable to have travel insurance beyond that.
