Travelling up the east coast in Australia, feb '14

Hey guys!
Guess the subject pretty much says it all. I wanna go from Sydney to Cairns in February, but don't really wanna do it alone. Is there anyone who's thinking the same thing and has suggestions on how to do it? I'm up to anything really. Heard about people going with campervans, hop on hop off buses and living in hostels, tents or just couchsurfing? Let me know if we're in the same boat and we can talk some more about it!
