Dear friends,
I want to stay in slovakia for a study for a period of 6 months, and my research is in two main important cities of Slovakia 1. Bratislava and 2. Nitra.
I want to stay in Nitra as it is cheaper but i have to go to Bratislava IV almost daily, so i want the information regarding staying in Nitra and most impotantly, about commuting from Nitra to Bratislava IV.
My question is, is it possible to commute daily and what is the best possible way of doing it and what about monthly or quaterly passes available for the travel and if possible how much it cost?
plz reply soon.
The trains from Nitra to Bratislava go all over the place before completing the journey. The quickest one goes via Leopoldov. Also the bus route from one to the other goes all round the houses along the 571 and 62. The whole journey is only about 100kms or so but as you are probably aware, very little public transport travels in a straight line across Eastern Europe.
There would be very little in it time wise between bus and train, but for sure the bus will be a lot cheaper. And with winter knocking at the door right now, the buses will always have the heating on. The trains will have excellent heating systems as well but it isn't on all the time on most of them. It'll be a furnace one minute and a fridge the next.
I can't help you with prices for season tickets etc., as we only travelled there and back once. We did the train and it was cheap. I think, converted, it was about €6 one way. That was in 2007.
Taking a quick look at google maps and bueker.net I see that there is no direct major track line between Nitra and Bratislava.
www.bahn.de tells me that trains take 2 to 3 hours between the two cities, with most connections requiring you to change in either Leopoldov or another city.
With that time I would think twice about daily commuting, especially as this is train station to train station. The actual time needed to travel might be significantly longer because you might have to take the bus to and from the train station at both ends.
www.jizdenka.cz confirms the price BeduinLeo gave you, train ticket for Nitra-Bratislava is currently 5,20 EUR one-way.
BTW, looking at the train connections that go from Nitra to Bratislava again I see that most connections/trains call at other train stations in Bratislava before they reach Bratislava hl.n. or Bratislava Nove Mesto. Since Bratislava VI is the district that is closest to Nitra this might help you - depending on where you have to go to you could leave the train in Bratislava-Raca for example.
You can find a map with all the train stations in Bratislava here:

t_maia is absolutely right.
There is no longer a direct train from Nitra to Bratislava that goes via Leopoldov, as I previously said there was.
There are several trains that will get you there within two hours though, changing at either Nove Zamky, Leopoldov, Surany and Zbehy. The fastest trip is via Zbehy, with a total train journey time (including the connection time wait) of 1 hour 40 minutes. However, as strange as it may seem, this service still goes via Leopoldov.
Hello. Bus is the most convenient way how to get from Nitra to Bratislava. I don't know how much does it cost exactly as I usually travel by train. Try to check this website (It's also in English): http://cp.atlas.sk/vlakbus/spojenie/
By bus it takes appr. 70 minutes + additional 30 min. to get from the bus station to Bratislava IV. Regarding the passes - I'm sure there are some. I remember I used to travel for discounted fee using the ISIC student card. The railway company allows you to buy discounted tickets using Euro 26 card. I don't know how is that with the bus companies. To be honest, travelling from Nitra to Bratislava on daily basis would be quite weary especially during the winter. From your post I don't have a clear picture what is the story behind but if you don't have a special need to stay in Nitra, try to find an accomodation directly in Bratislava. It'll be a little bit expensive, but you will surely save money and time by not travelling from Nitra.
