European Road trip, Budget Help Needed!

Hey there,

You are going to spend much of your time travelling. For such a journey. I would go out of season, May or mid September. The weather might not be as good but the roads will not be so busy and there will not be crowds everywhere. Also accommodation will be easier to get and cheaper.

A day in Bruges in enough for most people travelling around. Same Strasbourg. Less Lake Garda. One day Genoa. When I visited Monte Carlo I stayed overnight in nearby Menton which was a lot cheaper. Marseilles one day. Paris more days. Park in a car park. I found a cheap one on the Champs Elysées. Calais has nothing to offer the tourist.

They are just my views and others might suggest you spend more time in those places.

France has lots of toll roads, crossing it and driving along the south of France into Genoa. They can cost quite a lot of money (I paid £70 three years ago to cross France), but using other roads can take forever. You will pay more for food and fuel on motorways as in the UK, so sometimes it is worth leaving a motorway and going into a town where you can fill up at a supermarket and buy food and drinks. Though fuel pumps are 24 hours in some places, these need a FRENCH credit or debit card, so keep an eye on your fuel. Some supermarkets will open Sundays and shut Mondays.

Do get some kind of breakdown cover, and consider insurance for the trip (let your insurance company know). On German autobahns keep to the slow lanes and let the mad men pass. Watch your speed elsewhere. Cameras and police are rare but they are there.

Hi, Marc:

When will you start to travel? Do you drive your own car? Is hotel cost £1700 - £2000 for one person or two?

I am planning a trip to Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, Monaco and France for about 20 days. I am thinking about the possibility to find people travel to gether.

Regards

Lucy

Hey,

We do own our own car so will save money on renting one. Our insurance covers us for european travel also. The budget of £1700-£2000 is for both myself and my girlfriend.

We are going to the Dominican Republic for a 4 weeks at the start of 2012 so this trip will either be back end of 2012 or start/middle of 2013. At the minute everything is still in the planning stages.

Marc
