Live the dream

Hi Everyone,

Sounds awesome! How long you plan on travelling for? whats your budget etc? cuz going to all parts of the world and seeing it properly will take a long time and cost a lot in flights even on a RTW ticket..

A lot of people say Bangkok is like a backpackers hub and a great place to start.. I myself am planning on leaving for my RTW early next year.. travelling Asia first also (India>China>Vietnam>Cambodia>Laos>Thailand>Malaysia>Singapore) then after that hit Australias east coast on a working visa for about 6 months :D thats the plan anyways!

Can't wait to live the dream also!

My general rule while starting a trip to asia is go where you find the lowest fare first. I've had that be Osaka, Japan, Bangkok, Hong Kong or even Hanoi on different trips.

Certainly if you've never travelled much before in asia Bangkok and Khao San road are great starting points as you'll meet tons of travelers and all will be chock full of ideas and suggestions. You've also got some great ticket consolidators and a damn good discount airline in Air Asia which can move you around quickly in SE asia.

But my opinion would be to start in a hub city like Bangkok, singapore, HK, Tokyo or Seoul and then go from there.

I'd suggest starting where you are, in London. Take trains across Europe to Russia, and across Russia to Vladivostok (on the Pacific). See 'The Man in Seat 61' website for how to do this. Then take the ferry to Japan, and from Japan travel back through China, India, Iran and Turkey to Europe. Then home to London.

Or, from Japan travel south through China and Southeast Asia to Australia, then fly to South America, travel up to North America, and fly back to London.

Hi Dom,

I am hopefully going to be on the road for 1-2 years if God willing everything goes well. My budget will be very tight but I am sure I will be able to get by with the odd job here and there.

I was having a look around and had a chat with some freinds of mine who went travelling as well and they said that bangkok would be a great place to start and thailand looks AMAZING anyway. I am not sure where I will go from there as I just want to go with the moment but the idea is to go as far and as long as possible.

I was having a look on all the different airline and I saw that you can not book an open return date. Got any ideas how you would go about that as I am not sure when I will be heading back. Can you buy a one way ticket?

If your just going to start at a place like Bangkok i would just book a one-way ticket and then out aside say £500 for a flight home from wherever you are so youve always got funding to get home. Im not sure how difficult it is to sort of Visas though when your living for the moment, as some countries youll have to sort out visas before you get there. Im sure that won't be a problem though..
